Destin was given the title of the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.
A title like that comes with a great deal of expectation from the visitors and locals alike and Destin delivers on that with the variety of fish that can be found and caught in the area.
Naturally, once you hear about Destin having an amazing fishing scene the first question that pops into mind is “What kind of fish can I catch?”
Hands down one of the most popular fish in the area is Pompano. This silvery bodied fish has greenish black hues and can be found in smaller schools along the sandy beaches, inlets and bays. Around here you’ll usually find them around the 4 pound range but they can weigh up to 8 pounds.
Also a local favorite, Spanish Mackerel can be found along the shores but in larger schools than the previously mentioned Pompano. Averaging approximately 2-3 pounds you can find these beauties anywhere from Crab Island to Choctawhatchee Bay. They are also caught a lot on the area’s jetties as well as the pier on Okaloosa Island.
Triggerfish is a personal favorite of many a local here. They’re a little harder to clean than other fish due to a thicker skin but the flavor is out of this world. If you know of an area around here that has Red Snapper or Grouper then there’s a good possibility that you can find Triggerfish nearby. For a real treat you should try this fish after it’s smoked, dried and salted.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive, relaxing time catching fish then give your hand at trolling the waters. If you’re looking for larger catches or just fishing for sport then reward yourself with an adventure in deep sea fishing. No matter which way you choose to go, there are plenty of options in the area.
Once your adventure is done you can come back to your cozy slice of paradise here at Sea Oats and prepare your catch in your fully equipped kitchen. Once you prepare it to your liking you can take your dinner onto your private balcony or walk a couple extra steps onto the beach and make it a picnic.
